What’s so great about the Husqvarna 128LD?

Gas engine for mobility and power

The 128LD string trimmer is powered by a 28cc engine. This small, lightweight engine uses a 40:1 gasoline to 2 cycle oil mixture for fuel. You won’t be limited to the radius of your power cord with this compact, mobile trimmer. The tank holds 13.5 oz. of fuel for long run time. It is considered to be somewhat quieter than the average 2 cycle trimmer engine.

Easy starting with Smart Start feature

Husqvarna trimmers boast a unique starter feature called Smart Start which allows the trimmer to be started quickly and easily. A push of the air purge bulb and a couple pulls of the starting cord and you should be in business. Sometimes the choke might need adjustment upon first use out of the box, but after that, it will need little effort to get going. Another nifty feature is when the trimmer is turned off, the “auto return stop switch” will automatically go back to the start position for ready starting.

Quick string line advance

The 128LD comes with the T25 automatic trimmer head. The “bump” advance feature allows you to automatically advance the string line while the trimmer is operating. You simply bump the center of the trimmer head against the ground and additional line comes into operation.

Easy to reload string line spool reduces frustration

The T25 trimmer head has a spool that comes off to reload the string line so you don’t have to turn the trimmer upside down to work on it. The spool has key slots to keep the line from slipping while you are putting the spool back on the head. The T25 head can hold .065 inch, .080 inch or .095 inch line but comes preloaded with the .095 inch. If you don’t want to reload the line yourself, you can buy the T25 heads with string line pre-loaded on it. Also, you can use the T35 trimmer head, sold separately, but it will be a bit heavier and will reduce the power output.

Large cutting width cuts more in less time

You’ll cut a wide swath with each stroke when you use the Husqvarna 128LD string trimmer. The 17 inch spinning diameter of the string allows you to get down to business faster and more efficiently.

Straight shaft yields greater efficiency

The 128LD’s straight shaft transfers power more efficiently through the shaft than through a curved shaft. This creates less wear and tear on the braided wire cable and gives you more bang for your energy buck.

Also, the straight shaft allows you to trim more easily under bushes, fences and other low obstacles.

Adjustable handle eases back strain

The loop handle on the Husqvarna 128LD is adjustable to find a comfortable position to suit your arm length and body height. The ergonomic plastic handle minimizes transmission of vibrations and provides a comfortable grip to ease strain during use. At 11 lbs, the 128LD is on the heavier end of residential use trimmer models so the adjustable handle really helps.

Quick shaft detachment

Whether you are wanting more compact storage or you are adding an attachment, the detachable shaft coupler allows you to quickly and easily detach the string trimmer head with no tools required.

Why do we really like the Husqvarna 128LD?

Lots of attachments turn the 128LD into a powerful multi-use machine

What really makes the Husqvarna 128LD a powerhouse all in a small, portable machine is the ability to purchase lots of accessory attachments. Instead of buying separate devices for each activity, the Husqvarna 128LD can be your one-stop machine for year round yard work and landscape maintenance, even gardening!

The Husqvarna 128LD is designed to work with the Poulan Pro attachment series, designed by Poulan, which is owned by Husqvarna.  TrimmerPlus brand attachments are also reported by users to work with the 128LD, but this is not verified by the manufacturer.

Here are some of the super-useful attachments that are available for use with the 128LD string trimmer. Just pop off the detachable trimmer head at the shaft and press on the attachment. Voila! A completely different purpose.

  • Brush Cutter – If you have heavy brush that the string trimmer can’t handle, you might need a brush cutter. The Poulan Pro PP4000C brush cuttter attachment is 8 inches in diameter and has 4 heavy blades to handle small branches and brush too large for the trimmer.
  • Poulan Pro PP4000C Brush Cutter Trimmer Attachment
  • Pole Saw – Need to clean up overhead? The Poulan Pro PP5500P pole saw attachment has an 8 inch blade for removal of overhead limbs up to 6 inches in diameter. It has an extension to increase reach up to 12 feet. (Do not confuse this with the PP5000 model which will not fit the 128LD) Poulan Pro 952711672 Pole Pruner & Trimmer Saw Attachment for Split Shaft Trimmer

  • Cultivator – As if all the above weren’t enough, you can even add an attachment to till your garden.  The Poulan Pro PP2000D cultivator attachment features 8 inch steel tines and an adjustable tilling width of 6 to 9 inches. Poulan Pro PP2000T Cultivator Trimmer Attachment

The TrimmerPlus brand also lists a few other attachments including a power broom for brushing dirt, sand, mulch or other materials off your hard surfaces.

Husqvarna offers a great warranty backed by a strong brand

Husqvarna is a leading brand in the lawn power tool market and continues to produce high quality products. They stand behind all their products with a strong warranty. Consumer models such as the 128LD String Trimmer are backed by a 2 year warranty on defects in materials and workmanship. If you keep your proof of purchase, they will replace the defective equipment or offer you a repair at a nearby certified dealer.

Pros Cons
  • Easy to start

  • Straight shaft can be more difficult for shorter people to use.

Is a different trimmer better for you?

If you are short of stature, you might opt for a curved shaft trimmer. You may lose some power but it will make it easier to get the job done. If you want a quieter trimmer, but still gas powered, you might want to try a weed eater with a 4 cycle engine. Or if you want to ditch the ear protection entirely, you could try an electric trimmer. 1. Hi,
Could you be a little more specific on how short a person can be, and still be using this comfortably? The person I’m thinking of is 5ft 3inches tall.
    Thanks

    • Hi RJ, It is a matter of personal opinion and comfort, of course. I think a typical straight-shaft trimmer is going to be less comfortable for a 5ft 3in person to use, because of the angle required to keep the cutting head parallel to the ground. Probably not as difficult if said person was trimming slopes. For great trimming comfort for a shorter person, I recommend a curved-shaft trimmer. The Husqvarna 128 comes in a curved-shaft model, the Husqvarna 128CD. This trimmer has the same high-quality features, and the shaft is detachable for transport, but it will not support all the attachments.
